Vivian Maier – vive la quiet achievers!

Vivian Maier, the unknown American street photographer, reminds us all that beauty can be found in every face and street corner.

A nanny for most of her working life, Maier took more than 150,000 photographs during her secret career, mostly of people and architecture in major US cities such as NYC, Chicago and LA. Active in the 1950-90s, her work was discovered at an auction house in 2009 by John Maloof, a Chicago collector, and includes:
  • over 100,000 medium format negatives (90% of her work)
  • thousands of prints
  • countless undeveloped rolls of film

After sharing some of her work via Flickr, Maier’s photographs went viral, and success has built since then into firstly a book (above), and now a movie (trailer below). Maloof , on how she was was described by the children she looked after:

“She was a Socialist, a Feminist, a movie critic, and a tell-it-like-it-is type of person. She learned English by going to theaters, which she loved. … She was constantly taking pictures, which she didn’t show anyone.”

So we highly recommend going to see the movie at local Sydney cinemas, because it isn’t very often that you find a true gem like Maier was, and her story of recognition.
